FDA halts CytRx's trial on Lou Gehrig's disease drug

CytRx Corp. was told by the Food and Drug Administration to halt its clinical trial of a drug to treat Lou Gehrig's disease based on the need for additional analysis of previous animal studies involving the drug arimoclomol, the company said Tuesday.

CytRx said in a relase that it has asked for further clarification from the FDA, and said that "arimoclomol has been shown to be safe and well-tolerated after being administered to about 185 study volunteers."

Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS, is a progressive condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
